Frequently Asked Questions

Some questions are more common than others when it comes to Physical Therapy. Here are some of the ones that might relate to you:

What is Physical Therapy?

Physical Therapy involves the direct treatment of physical injuries. We work to assist people in returning to their previous functional level. The emphasis is always on the goals of our patients. This can be as simple as being able to comb your hair to as complex as returning to competitive sports. Physical therapy provides education on the underlying cause of symptoms/injury, prevention of future injuries, and understanding how to manage chronic conditions throughout your life. Physical therapists are knowledgeable not only in injury and prevention, but also general health and fitness.

Who can benefit from Physical Therapy?

Our Physical Therapists work with people of all ages. When people think of Physical Therapy, they often think that it is only for people that have had a severe injury or complicated surgery. Physical therapists also help those with mild problems or chronic aches and pains that have not had surgery.

What is involved in the Physical Therapy process?

Your Physical Therapist will use a very comprehensive approach in determining exactly what you will need to obtain the maximum benefit from your rehabilitation. First, your therapist will complete a thorough evaluation. Second, your therapist will explain the results of your evaluation and recommend a customized plan to address all limitations. Third, you and your therapist will establish the frequency and duration of the plan. This depends upon your schedule, rate of healing, and complexity of your injury.

How do I make an appointment?

You or your physician’s office can call and schedule an evaluation. Some physician offices will fax over a prescription and our office will contact you to schedule.

Do I need a prescription from my doctor before receiving services?

No, you can receive an evaluation by a physical therapist without a prescription from a physician. You can also return within 6 months for additional treatment of a recurrent injury. In some cases your insurance provider requires a referral from a physician to cover your expenses, call the number on the back of your insurance card to help you determine your insurance benefits.

I want to go to Maximum Performance Physical Therapy and my doctor referred me elsewhere, can I choose my own Physical Therapist?

Yes! You can choose your physical therapy provider even if you have a prescription for a different physical therapist. Bring your prescription with you to your first appointment and we will take care of the rest!

What is your cancellation policy?

If you cannot keep your appointment, please call us as soon as possible. We realize that sometimes emergencies come up and your plans may change. When you call, we will help you reschedule your appointment.  Giving us as much notice as possible helps us better serve you and our other patients. Frequently missing appointments delays your recovery and can turn a simple injury into a chronic problem.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable, loose clothing and tennis shoes. We do have a limited number of shorts and tank tops available during your treatment. During physical therapy sessions, it is important to have access to the injured area for effective treatment.

How long is each session?

Your first visit includes the comprehensive evaluation and takes 60-90 minutes. Sessions thereafter are determined by your condition, approximately 45-60 minutes. Your Physical Therapist will develop an individually customized Plan of Care and continually reassess your needs each session which can vary the time.

How often will I need to come to Physical Therapy?

Your Plan of Care will be determined by you, your physical therapist and your physician. The average schedule is 1-3 times per week. Your schedule will depend on the degree of injury/dysfunction and your available time. Bring your calendar to your first appointment so you can schedule your appointments as far in advance as possible, this will make it easier to choose times that are the most convenient for you.

What if I have questions after I leave?

Please call us and ask for your physical therapist. If we are assisting other patients we will call you back as soon as possible. You are welcome to leave your work, cell or home phone number. We can also text or e-mail you if that is more convenient.

How does my doctor know how my treatment is progressing?

Your doctor is sent a letter describing your treatment plan after your evaluation. Then periodic progress notes and discharge summaries are sent to inform the doctor of your progress. Notes can also be sent to other medical providers at your request.
